We're still here at VaticanSmoke. Not much news to report on during somewhat of a "dead period" for the football team. Today the team has finished finals and is heading to Hawaii, which should begin the flow of a bit more information. The Vegas line is still around Hawaii favored by 1 to 1.5 points. Can you blame them? Realistically, the Irish offense has not played consistently well enough to beat good teams since the first half of the North Carolina game.
I have seen a lot of message board postings and other musings over the past two weeks that have really explained the decision to keep Charlie Weis as coach. Everyone has an opinion - from ESPN to the guy at your water cooler. But the prevailing current that runs through the ND family of former players and educated fans is that keeping Charlie was the right decision. Charlie is a proven recruiter and next season will be the first where he has 4 full classes of his recruited depth. Keeping Charlie also avoids the reputation of being a "coaching guillotine", at least until next year. Stability is another by product of the decision - something Notre Dame football hasn't had in quite some time.
Despite the majority acceptance of the decision to keep Charlie, everyone agrees that 2009 will be "it" for Charlie. Sink or swim, Waterloo, and whatever other analogy - they all apply. Lucky for Charlie, he has a core of sophomores and juniors who will lead the team next year, with a full but average class of seniors sprinkled in. And oh yeah, another easy schedule.
